The fear of missing out

This weekend was one of the two weekends a year where I work. It was open house. I spend a day and a half setting up, breaking down, setting out food, answering questions and otherwise attending to people's needs. It's exhausting.

So, instead of spending the night in, we went to the Roller Derby.

Years ago,I decided that I wanted to go out for the team. I wanted to be a derby girl.

Last night I really thought about it. Do I have the time and money? Money I can swing. But the time is at a premium. Add to that the fact that I turn 40 this year. I guess I'll have to shelve that particular desire.

Actually, there are a lot of things on that particular shelf.

  • There is my stint in the SCA. A friend of mine was elevated to the order of the Pelican, which made me think fondly on those times. A lack of money, and a complete lack of desire to research put that activity on the shelf.  I miss it, but I don't know if I fit well there.
  • At one point I wanted to go back to school, for student affairs, or some such. Student loans killed that one.

I don't wan tot get to the end of my life and regret not doing something...  BUT.. I also don't want to get there and regret not being able to do ANYTHING because I was spread too thin.

I think that instead I'm going to focus on what I can do.  And what I need to do

  • Finishing unpacking the house, cleaning it and making it fit for company
  • My weight Loss journey
  • Running the races that I've signed up for
  • Managing money so I can save for my dream vacation
  • spending time with my friends
  • and doing all other things as time permits.

It's Friday!!!

And it's finally acting like spring.

Yesterday morning, it was 25.  This morning?  50.

So what did I do?  I finally went out running again!

And I came home to a wonderful surprise!

This was my current weight!

I try to weigh at the same time, under the same conditions.  I also try not to weigh every day.

But this is good news because:

I'm only 3.6 pounds to my Weight Watchers 10% goal!

Coincidentally, my goal for Tuesday's weigh in is to be between 172 and 173.

With some hard work (and no snacks), I can make it!

Tomorrow is going to be full of running around.  It's Open House.  Also this is the weather forecast:

Spring Forward?

found it on Facebook
 So yeah, it's March 26th.

It was 29 degrees when I left for work today.

It's a bit cold for me to run in, so Misty and I have made due with walking the Spousal Equivalent to the bus stop.

Yesterday it snowed.  Even Misty didn't want to go outside!

Notice today's text messages with the SE:

The problem with this, is all I want to do is sleep
Since it looks like we have a few more days of this crap, I need to be proactive.  I need to make a chore list and stick to it.  I need to plan some indoor exercise after my morning walk.
I have to suck it up until spring!

Though with spring comes yard work... and I dislike yard work...

I need a nap

One of the challenges of only having one car is overtime.  Specifically Sunday over time, when I have to be at church that day.

My day started at O'dark thirty.  5am to be exact.  We all bundle into the car (myself, the dog and the Spousal Equivalent) and I take him to work.  ON the way back, the dog and I stop at the bank to deposit some money into the ATM.

I get home at 6am, and set up to watch NCIS.  (Mainly to keep me awake).  I close my eyes and open them again at 8:15.

Cue the Benny Hill music themed run around the house to get ready.

I run to Starbucks for coffee and oatmeal then get to church late.

It's when I'm there, I notice something.  Everyone's in blue.

Except me.

Then people started offering me sweaters ans scarves.  All in Blue.  Apparently when the color blue was mentioned at rehearsal on Thursday they meant to wear it.  I'm dense people! You want me to wear it, tell me!

So I'm sleepy, groggy, hungry and now embarrassed.  But no, it doesn't end there.

By the time I got around to eating my oatmeal it has solidified into a solid, pasty, inedible mass.

This is the point where I burst into tears and seriously contemplated just going home.  But I didn't.

Now I'm off to eat my leftover pizza and take a nap.

I saw Divergent

Before we begin, I'm a HUGE fan of the books.

I also know that a written medium and a visual medium are VERY different... and sometimes changes need to be made.

via wikipedia
My views of the movie.  (In bullet points)

  • Theo James's last role with an American accent MUST have been set in Boston.  His Four has a bit of that Boston accent.
  • I totally spotted the Veronica Roth's cameo!
  • The narration at the beginning?  Necessary.
  • People have accused the other characters to be a little one-dimensional.  Isn't that by design?  Like... what the faction system breeds and values?
  • They GREATLY expanded the role of Jeanine Matthews.  In the book she was the mastermind.  The architect of the awfulness... but mostly in lip-service only.  IN the movie she's on screen explaining the awfulness.  I was OK with this.
  • The end... they didn't get the hard drive with the data!  I need to re-read Insurgent to see if this will be a problem
  • Al's end seemed too abrupt.  The book laid a better foundation for it.
  • Natalie Prior is written as more of a bad ass.  I with we could have seen that more.  Especially at the end.
  • Peter needed to be more... psychotic.  The movie paints him as a dick.  But the character should be a psychotic dick.
  • The book takes pains to show the difference between Four's ideals as a Dauntless (Bravery and honor) and Eric's Dauntess (He's a straight up Sadist).  The movie made it more subtle.
  • I missed the small things:  visiting day.  Dauntless cake.  (Damnit.. now I want chocolate cake)

I really enjoyed Shailene Woodley's Tris.  Tris isn't an extraordinary person like Katniss.  She's a person that has more sides to her than the average Faction member.  I think the choice in actress was a great one.

I even liked Theo James in the role of Four.

Like any first of a series, it laid the foundation of the world.  I'm very interested to see what happens next.  How they take the changes in the end of the movie and translate it to the beginning of Insurgent.  (Spoiler alert.. the end of the book is very different)

One thing that is lost when you take away the first person narration is the insight into what Tris is thinking.  Why did she chose Dauntless?  In her mind, she wasn't good enough to be Abnegation.  (The movie touches on this.. but not enough, in my opinion).

This is why she chose Dauntless:

Win some, Lose Some

Since the weather took a turn for the better, I've actually had an opportunity to get out and run in the morning.  It's felt really good.

And it's starting to pay off!  I broke the 173 barrier when I got on the scale this morning.  Now I need to keep it up until Tuesday!  (When I have my official Weight Watchers weigh in)

Of course I have one large thing in my way.

It's one of those weeks.  You know.. shark week...

And all I want is chocolate!!!!  I also have a pounding headache and all I want to do is curl up and watch Disney movies.

The weather has been on everyone's mind lately.  It's 70 one day, and snowing two days later.  The same thing is going to happen this weekend.  70 on Saturday and 45 on Sunday.  Snow possible on Tuesday.

I hope I can keep up with the running in the light of this.  When it gets cold, all I want to do is stay in bed.

My goals for the week:

  • Exercise every day
  • 10,000 steps every day.
  • make a chore list (just 3 things every day) and actually do them.
  • Smaller portions of dinner
  • buy some healthy snacks, and portion them out (so I don't eat too much)
What do you think?  Doable?

My Morning involved a lot of Fail

Oh yes, there was so much fail.

I woke up, and the world was cold, rainy and windy.

The puppy and I got ready and left the house with the Spousal Equivalent to walk him to the bus stop.  We got to the corner just as a bus was pulling away.

Yup.  the 430.  His bus.  Now it could have been the early run leaving late.. or the later run REALLY early.  We didn't know.  But we decided to have me drive him.

This required gas in the car.  And a squirt bottle to keep Misty from barking at the windshield wipers.  We stop at Wawa, where the SE runs in to buy breakfast.  As we pull out he announces that he's calling in.

Back inside the house, I shower and make breakfast.  As I sit back to finish my coffee, the SE asks if I'm ready to go to work.  I think I growled at him and pointed at my cup.

We finally got ourselves going and I got to work.

One of my side projects I'm working on is tracking down my damn LivingSocial order!

I've never had a issue with LivingSocial or Groupon before.  And this isn't technically with them either.

on February 23rd I bought a LivingSocial voucher for wireless bluetooth headphones.  I redeemed it.  My card was charged by  I didn't receive an email.  Or any communication.  So I decided to follow up.  The phone doens't get answered.  The "live chat" on the site failed.  I sent in an email and am waiting.

For their part, LivingSocial were angels and want me to follow up if I don't hear anything in 48 hours.

The only good thing this week?  I lost a bit of weight.

My goal for next week:  174 pounds.

What the heck, weather?

Found this on Facebook
Yeah, this is how the weather has been.

I'm not kidding!!

Saturday:  70 and sunny
Sunday:  36 and Rainy... with snow in places!

Today it's rainy and cold.

It's also St. Patrick's day....

Saturday, when it was nice out, we went to Busch Gardens.  it was their annual Pass Member Preview day.  We saw a show, walked a lot, and I took my BFF's daughter on some rides.

I even went on a roller coaster.

It was a kiddie coaster.

But it still counts!

There is a hilarious video of me on another ride... I'm trying to figure out how to upload it!

I'm actually glad that it's spring.

I have yard work to do.

Yes, you heard me right.

This is normally me:

But we actually have a place with things like.... yards...

I have to keep the front weeded, and I need to de-leaf the back yard.

And I'm actually wanting to get large pots and like... plant vegetables and stuff!

This requires me to purchase gardening tools!

I know, right?

How many alarms have to fail...

...before I miss my morning work out?

Apparently the number is 3.

I have a variety of morning alarms, to try to get me out the door.  5, 5:15 and 5:30
are to get me up and working out.  6:25 is to shower.  7 is to get dressed and 7:15 is to leave.

After having a epic dream that included a wedding, 60's clothes and Rosie O'Donnell, I was woken up by my "get in the shower" alarm.

Did I get to work out?  Nope.  I got myself going, no thanks to the animals.

Misty made a blanket nest, and gave me the big eyes.

Meryl followed me around, meowing at me.

My first thought was: Well, I'll just work out when I get home.  Not so fast.  I have choir tonight.  Maybe I'll spend my lunch hour walking to the Governor's Palace or the capitol and back.  I'll take Sutton Foster with me.

Ask and ye shall receive

Or, who pissed off Elsa?

So last night, in advance of sleet and snow I tweeted this:

We were supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow, on top of a quarter inch of ice.  No one wants to drive in that.

Less than an hour later, this happened

Thanks work!

But seriously, this is all getting a bit old.  I actually have 1 time sensitive thing that NEEDS to get done tomorrow.

In other news:  Since I'm such a HUGE fan of Bunheads that I took the plunge and bought season 1 of Gilmore Girls from Amazon Instant Video.  If things keep going like they are, I'll have the entire season watched by next week!

And now time to play housewife and finish dinner!

A new week, a new me

After a weekend spent resting and trying to beat this cold, it's time to get back to the business go getting healthy.

Tomorrow I had planned on going running.

And then I saw that we're supposed to get freezing rain.

So in to plan B! Just Dance! (Or a work out in Hulu).

The rest of the week will be spent walking the Spousal Equivalent to the bus stop, then running with the puppy. I'm using the Couch to 5K app on the my phone. Though, when I have the dog with me I usually can only do half the workout.

My plan for the weekend includes a bit more running, and a Barre3 DVD!

Also, I meal planned! Healthy snacks and planned meals.... This is going to be a good week!

Sometimes you have to just throw in the towel

And I did that yesterday.  After a week of being sick, I was feeling crappy enough to call in and take the whole day off.  My head was pounding, my sinuses were full.  Moving hurt.  It was time.

Unfortunately, this means that my one goal for the week might go undone.

I stated on twitter that there was NO hope of winning my DietBet.  As frustrating as that was, I decided that my new goal was to see a weight starting with "173" on Tuesday.  The complete lack of exercise has kind of killed that goal as well.  (Plus the fact that I won't be at Weight Watchers on Tuesday, I have a Doctor's appointment)

I got out this morning and took the dog for a walk around the block.  It's a start.  Next?  Some Wii Fit U Yoga.

When one feels this crappy, one needs to start back at the beginning.

New Goal:  See "173" on my weight next week.  And to not beat myself up about it.
